Welcome to ArCA, the Archive of Corporate Apologies
When I worked in sustainable development I was tasked to set up and run a due diligence system to assess the advisability of engaging with potential donors and operational partners. Due to the geographical areas in which we operated, we were frequently of interest to entities concerned with CSR and green operations for a variety of reasons. I would investigate their track record, whether there were indicators of them being unreliable or reckless.
Essentially: were they “bad operators”? If they had had major scandals or lawsuits, how long ago were these? Had they attempted to repair the situation?
The art of the corporate apology can feature a range of qualities, which can include fear, arrogance, entitlement, genuine dread and remorse, etc. It can be issued by a human, by an entity, or by a human as entity.
I’ve started collecting corporate apologies and the incidents that surround them and have elaborated a taxonomy for them. I am beginning to build the archive and develop a website that will include a game.
You can:
* Check out the Taxonomy of corporate apologies
* Play Memos - a little corporate apologies madlibs
* Explore the Archive of Corporate Apologies

Apple Music apologizes to Taylor Swift
Incident
When Apple Music offered 3 free months of streaming without paying artists Taylor Swift boycotted the company. Swift posted on Tumbler about this and an Apple Music VP responded with "we hear you" over on Twitter. Another of his tweets stated "#AppleMusic will pay artist for streaming, even during customer’s free trial period". He later expanded on that statement in a Billboard interview. They pledged to change the system and remunerate artists. <br />
To note: this was an instance of an apology to an individual posted on a public platform.

" A study published in a Harvard paper found that inquiries from guests with names statistically more common among African Americans were 16% less likely to be accepted by hosts compared to those with names more common among white individuals. This revealed a systemic problem of racial bias within Airbnb. Following public scrutiny and pressure from government officials, Airbnb took steps to address the issue and formed a task force comprised of experts and advocates, including the director of the ACLU's legislative office and Eric Holder, former Attorney General of the United States.
The company ultimately decided to still allow hosts to view guests' names and pictures, but implementing measures to reduce bias. Measures included optional bias training for hosts, increased promotion of the Instant Book feature, and a commitment to making one million listings bookable via Instant Book. Additionally, Airbnb made adjustments to the search results page, making host pictures less prominent." <br />
The use of any of this measures has been questioned repeatedly and it is considered that Airbnb makes it very difficult for anyone to sue on the basis of discrimintaion.

The 2017 Equifax data breach affected citizens in the U.S. (as many as 147.9 million people), England (15.2 million), and Canada (19,000). The massive leak included Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses, and even some driver's license numbers and credit card information. Equifax's stock dropped 30% in the aftermath. CEO Richard Smith retired immediately.
<br />
The company then faced criticism for its handling of the situation. A couple examples of the many issues: the website it set up to address the breach was plagued by technical issues and the customer service hotline was inadequately staffed. Initially, the free credit monitoring service offered by Equifax required consumers to waive their right to sue, causing public outrage. This clause was later removed from the service terms and conditions.
<br />
Interim CEO Paulino do Rego Barros Jr. apologized for the handling of the situation in a letter published in the Wall Street Journal.
Former CEO Richard Smith apologized in House and Senate hearings. He took personal responsibility, but he also blamed one unnamed person in the IT department for not communicating correctly about a necessary security patch.

When Apple Music offered 3 free months of streaming without paying artists Taylor Swift boycotted the company. Swift posted on Tumbler about this and an Apple Music VP responded with a tweet stating the company would pay artists for streaming "even during customer's free trial period" and another noting "we hear you". He later expanded on that statement in a Billboard interview. <br />
To note: this was an instance of an apology to an individual posted on a public platform.

Incident
Following disclosures by former Cambridge Analytica employee Christopher Wylie in 2018, the world found out that the consulting firm had harvested personal data from millions of Facebook users without their consent throughout the 2010s. They did this using a quiz app "This Is Your Digital Life" to collect data from the app's users and their friends. 87 million profiles were harvested in total. This data was used for political advertising, which included the Ted Cruz and Donald Trump campaigns in the 2016 elections. The company was also accused of being involved in the Brexit referendum, though evidence of significant breaches was limited. <br />
Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, publicly apologized multiple times for the Cambridge Analytica scandal. He expressed remorse and took responsibility for the incident in various forums, including in written statements, during interviews, and in congressional hearings. It's worth noting that the scandal prompted a significant public outcry and scrutiny, which led Zuckerberg to address the issue multiple times to regain trust and transparency.
This event is notorious due to the amount of times Mark Zuckerberg tried to apologize before he actually apologized.

This prompted tremendous backlash and harsh coverage. Even Business Insider ran the headline "BP CEO Tony Hayward Apologizes For His Idiotic Statement".

"The high-street giant has been forced to recall a range of socks with a pattern that appeared to resemble the word Allah written in Arabic. In 2018, clothing company H&M was mired in scandal due to the photograph for an item listed in their store: it featured a black boy modeling a hoodie that read “coolest monkey in the jungle”. This caused an uproar in social media and numerous celebrities called the company out for racism. Weeknd and G-Eazy quit working with H&M over the incident. <br />
A NBC News piece at the time noted that protests were held at H&M stores in South Africa "while the response [was] more muted in Europe. <br />
The company appointed a diversity leader and featured an apology on its website stating "we have got this wrong and we agree that, even if unintentional, passive or casual racism needs to be eradicated wherever it exists."

Incident
In 2013, clothing company H&M put out a line of "faux-feather headdresses" in Canada.
There was criticism on social media and the company received complaints from people that found this to be cultural appropriation and disrespectful towards First Nations peoples.
"A H&M spokeswoman said the hair pieces – patterned headbands with bright pink and purple flowers – were part of the company's summer music festival collection called H&M Loves Music. She said that the Swedish fashion chain received three complaints and quickly decided to withdraw the headdresses from sale."
H&M did not issue an apology but did remove the headdress.

Incident
In 2019, Actress Jameela Jamil took to Twitter to accuse an Avon ad campaign of body shaming.
<br />
The same day, Avon responded with “Hi Jameela, we completely understand where you’re coming from. We realize that we missed the mark with this messaging. We have removed this messaging from all future marketing materials. We fully support our community in loving their bodies and feel confident in their own skin.”
Under another critical tweet from the actress, Avon added: "We hear you and we apologize. We messed up on our Smooth Moves Naked Proof messaging. We want to let you know that we are working diligently to remove this messaging from our marketing materials moving forward. We’re on it. We love our community of women."

__NOTOC__
Don't know where to start?
Just click on "Random page" in the column to your left.

H&M pulls hoodie reading “coolest monkey in the jungle” after it was modeled by a black child
Incident

Welcome to the Taxonomy and Classifications section. You can use it to navigate the archive.
* Severity: How severe was the incident that resulted in the apology? Light, moderate or severe.
* Year: Year in which the apology took place.
* Alignment: based on role playing games. Was the apology Lawful Evil? Was it Chaotic Good?
* Response: who issued the response.
* Vehicle:
* Corrective Action: indicates whether one was taken. An entry is clasified as No Corrective Action when the corporation in question did not take any steps towards improving the situation resulting from the incident it is apologizing for, nor did it take any measures to prevent the situation from happening in the future. This includes anything from holding those responsible via firing, changing policies or procedures, hiring a diversity leader, ensuring specific trainings are conducting, recalling a product, pulling an ad, etc.
* Restitution:
* Backlash: instances in which the apology is considered bad or insuficient and there is a public outcry or some form of market punishment like a stock drop.
* Apology: some apology instances are classified as Non-apologies when there is a statement issued that appears to be doing the legwork of an apology.
* Industry:industry in which the incident takes place: food, fashion, energy, etc.
* Company: corporation involved.
* Issue: area of societal, political, or environmental concern.
* Others: assorted attributes of a given apology. These vary quite a bit and can inglude: the fact that several apologies were issued ("Multiple Apologies"), that there was a public outcry due to an apology perceived as bad by a large segment of the population ("Backlash"), or even the fact that the ubiquitous phrase "We've missed the mark." was used by the company.

The Archive of Corporate Apologies was created and is maintained by me, Margot.
</br>
Essentially I had to ask: were they “bad operators”? If they had had major scandals or lawsuits, how long ago were these? Had they attempted to repair the situation?
In looking into this and developing processes to respond to these questions I kept running into corporate apologies. They featured a range of qualities, which as a human apology does, can include fear, arrogance, entitlement, genuine dread and remorse, etc. A corporate apology can be issued by a human, by an entity, or by a human as entity.
But the motivation always feels hollow and unsatisfactory, as a company is not a living being and is not capable of remorse. Still, it is incredibly frequent for victims or victims' loved ones to place stock on an apology, especially when it is not forthcoming.
